What began as a bold idea after retirement turned into one of the most unique home projects imaginable. After spending his entire life as an aircraft captain, my husband didn’t just want a quiet life — he wanted to build something unforgettable. Instead of a traditional house, he chose a decommissioned passenger airplane and gave it a completely new purpose.
The concept was ambitious from the start. We decided not just to place the aircraft on land, but to partially bury it, integrating it into the landscape. Half of the plane was carefully positioned underground, forming a hidden and reinforced bunker. This lower level was designed for long-term security and storage, with dedicated zones for supplies, water, and essential systems.
The upper section of the aircraft became our living space. Large windows were preserved and enhanced to bring in natural light, while the interior was redesigned into a warm, modern home. Despite its unusual structure, the space feels surprisingly comfortable, combining aviation aesthetics with natural materials and soft lighting.
Around the aircraft, we created a fully functional and beautiful property. The land was shaped to blend with the coastal environment, and we added unique lifestyle elements that make everyday living enjoyable. A small private golf area became a place to relax, while a solar-powered carport supports our move toward energy independence. We now drive an electric Volvo and use a compact golf cart to move around the property.
One of the most special parts of the project is the cockpit. Instead of removing it, we transformed it into a fully immersive flight simulator using Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. It allows us to relive the experience of flying in an incredibly realistic way, right from our home.
Below, in the bunker section, we focused on functionality and resilience. Reinforced structures, organized storage systems, and technical zones ensure that the space is not just secure, but practical for long-term use if needed. Everything is designed with efficiency and reliability in mind.
This project became much more than just a house. It represents a lifestyle built around creativity, independence, and the courage to turn an unusual idea into reality. Living inside a former aircraft, surrounded by nature and powered by modern technology, is something we never imagined would feel so natural.

Private Yard Design Around the Aircraft Home
The outdoor space around the aircraft home was designed to feel just as unique and functional as the house itself. Instead of a standard yard, the entire area was carefully planned as a private lifestyle zone that blends relaxation, design, and practicality.
The centerpiece of the yard is a custom mini golf landscape, built with smooth curves, clean edges, and multiple putting zones. It is not just decorative — it creates an interactive environment where you can relax, play, and enjoy the ocean view at the same time. The greenery is maintained at a premium level, giving the space a resort-like atmosphere.
A structured pathway system connects all key areas of the property. Minimalist stone steps lead from the entrance gate to the aircraft, creating a clean visual line and easy access. Every path is aligned with the geometry of the landscape, making the entire yard feel organized and intentional.
Next to the aircraft, a modern pergola zone was built as an outdoor living and dining area. This space is designed for daily use — from morning coffee to evening gatherings. The wooden structure adds warmth and contrasts naturally with the metal body of the aircraft, creating a balanced aesthetic between industrial and organic materials.
On the functional side, a solar-powered carport was installed near the entrance. It provides both shade and energy generation, supporting the home’s ?????????? concept. The driveway is designed for smooth access, with enough space for both a main vehicle and a small electric cart used for moving around the property.
Privacy was also a priority. The entire yard is surrounded by a clean fence line combined with dense greenery, creating a fully enclosed and quiet environment. From inside, you feel completely isolated, even though the open ocean is just beyond the property.
This yard is not just an addition to the house — it completes the concept. It turns the project into a full living environment where design, comfort, and independence work together as one system.

Lifestyle Yard Upgrade: Comfort, Energy, and Leisure
The yard was not just designed — it was fully upgraded into a complete lifestyle zone where comfort, technology, and leisure come together in one place.
One of the key additions is the solar-powered carport. Under it, we placed our electric Volvo, creating a fully autonomous charging solution directly at home. The system allows us to generate clean energy during the day and use it for daily driving without relying on external infrastructure. Next to it, we added a compact golf cart, which quickly became the most convenient way to move around the property.
The barbecue area became the social center of the yard. Built under a modern wooden pergola, it combines functionality with a warm and inviting atmosphere. A full-size grill, a large dining table, and carefully planned lighting make it perfect for both everyday meals and gatherings with friends. The placement next to the aircraft creates a unique contrast between industrial design and cozy outdoor living.
For relaxation and entertainment, we created a private mini golf zone. Smooth greens, clean curves, and multiple holes turn the yard into an interactive space rather than just a visual one. It is perfect for unwinding in the evening, practicing, or simply enjoying time outdoors with an ocean view.
Everything in the yard is connected — from energy systems to leisure areas. The combination of an electric vehicle, solar infrastructure, barbecue zone, and golf space transforms the property into more than just a home. It becomes a fully functional environment designed for independence, comfort, and a high-quality lifestyle.

Interior Design: Living Space, Bunker Systems, and Flight Simulator
Inside, the project reaches a completely different level. What used to be a standard aircraft cabin is now a fully functional and beautifully designed living space. The interior combines natural materials like wood and stone with the original aircraft structure, creating a unique balance between warmth and engineering precision.
The main living area includes an open kitchen, dining space, and lounge zone. Clean lines, ?????????? lighting, and panoramic windows make the space feel much larger than expected. A second level was added inside the fuselage, creating a private sleeping area while maintaining the full height of the aircraft body. Every detail was designed to feel like a modern home, not just a converted plane.
Below, the bunker level is built for reliability and long-term use. This area includes a fully organized supply corridor with food storage, water reserves, and technical systems. Everything is structured for efficiency, with clear zoning and easy access to critical resources. The lighting and layout are designed to reduce stress and make the underground environment comfortable for extended stays.
The most iconic transformation is the cockpit. Instead of removing it, we turned it into a full-scale flight simulator powered by Microsoft Flight Simulator 2025. Multiple panoramic screens recreate real-world flight conditions, while the original pilot seats and control panels enhance the realism. It is not just entertainment — it is an immersive experience that brings aviation back to life inside the home.
This combination of living space, bunker infrastructure, and advanced simulation makes the project truly unique. It is not only a place to live, but a fully integrated environment where technology, comfort, and personal history come together.
