My husband spent most of his life as a helicopter pilot. Flying was not just his job — it was his entire world. When he finally retired, the helicopter he trained on for years was scheduled to be scrapped and turned into metal. For most people, that would be the end of the story. But for him, it was just the beginning.
Instead of letting it disappear, he made a bold decision — he bought it. Not as a souvenir, but as the foundation of something completely new. We found a quiet piece of land far from the city, surrounded by open space and nature, and started building a project that felt almost unreal.
The first step was the most challenging. We designed a custom-shaped excavation deep into the ground, carefully matching the dimensions of the helicopter. The digging process took time and precision, as the structure needed to support both the aircraft and the future house above it. Layer by layer, the land was transformed into a hidden space that would soon become something extraordinary.
Once the excavation was ready, the helicopter was carefully placed inside and secured. It was no longer a machine meant to fly, but it was far from useless. This was the moment when the idea truly came to life — turning a retired aircraft into the core of a fully functional underground bunker.
Above it, we built a modern A-frame house that blends naturally with the landscape. From the outside, it looks like a simple and cozy home, but beneath it lies a completely different world. Around the house, we created a comfortable outdoor space — a lounge area for relaxing evenings, a hot tub for cold nights, solar panels for energy independence, and a small orchard with fruit trees that adds both beauty and practicality to the land.
But the most unique part of this project is hidden below. Inside the helicopter, we designed a fully functional underground living space. Storage systems, ventilation, and essential autonomous features were carefully integrated into the structure. The original cockpit became something special — a built-in flight simulator where my husband can sit, hold the controls, and relive the feeling of being in the air.
Now this place is more than just a home. It is a story, a memory preserved in a completely new form, and a lifestyle built around freedom, creativity, and independence. What was once meant to be destroyed has become the heart of our home — hidden underground, yet more alive than ever.

As the construction moved forward, the project slowly transformed from an idea into a fully functional living space. The house above ground became the visible part of our new life — simple, calm, and deeply connected to nature. Large windows bring in natural light throughout the day, while the A-frame design keeps the structure efficient and warm in any season.
The outdoor area was designed to be both practical and relaxing. We built a lounge zone where we spend evenings, added a hot tub for comfort, and planted fruit trees that will grow with time. A small garden provides fresh food, and solar panels ensure that the entire system remains independent from external energy sources.
But what truly makes this place unique is the hidden layer beneath it.
Access to the underground space is discreet, almost invisible to anyone who doesn’t know it exists. Once inside, the atmosphere changes completely. The helicopter structure creates a strong, enclosed environment that feels secure and isolated from the outside world.
We carefully adapted the interior to make it livable. Ventilation systems were installed to maintain fresh air circulation, and storage areas were built to support long-term use. Lighting was designed to feel warm and natural despite being underground, turning the space into something comfortable rather than confined.
The cockpit remains the most emotional part of the entire project. It was preserved and enhanced into a realistic simulator, allowing my husband to reconnect with his past. Sitting there, surrounded by the original controls, he can relive moments from his career — not as memories, but as an experience.
Over time, this underground bunker became more than just a backup space. It turned into a private retreat, a place for focus, and a symbol of transformation. What used to be a machine designed for flight is now a foundation for stability and protection.
Living here feels different in every way. Above ground, there is light, openness, and nature. Below ground, there is silence, security, and history. Together, they create a balance that is hard to find anywhere else — a home that exists on two levels, both physically and emotionally.
This project is not only about building something unusual. It is about giving a second life to something meaningful and turning it into a place where past and present exist together.

Instead of letting the helicopter be scrapped, we decided to turn it into the core of something completely unique. After transporting it to our land, we excavated a custom-shaped underground pit designed to match the exact size and geometry of the aircraft. This required careful planning to ensure structural stability and long-term durability.
Once the helicopter was placed underground, we reinforced the surrounding walls and installed proper drainage and insulation systems to protect it from moisture and temperature changes. The goal was not just to hide it, but to transform it into a fully autonomous bunker.
Inside, the original structure of the helicopter was preserved as much as possible. The cockpit became the centerpiece of the entire space. We restored the control panels and integrated a modern flight simulation system directly into the original pilot interface. This allows a fully immersive experience — sitting in a real cockpit and using real controls while flying through virtual environments.
The rest of the interior was redesigned for long-term living. Along the sides, we installed compact sleeping areas, organized storage systems, and independent power units. Soft lighting and wooden finishes create a warm contrast with the metal structure, making the space both functional and comfortable.
A ventilation system ensures constant airflow, and backup energy systems allow the bunker to operate without external electricity. Every detail is built around resilience and self-sufficiency.
Access to the bunker is hidden inside the house through a reinforced floor hatch with a ladder leading down. From the outside, nothing reveals what is below, but inside it is a fully equipped underground system combining survival functionality with a personal aviation experience.
This is not just a bunker. It is a place where past and present connect — where a retired helicopter continues to “fly” in a completely new way.
